When I first heard about the SAFW student competition I was all ears and getting in gear for the masterpiece I was gonna create. To force my way into the industry the ideas of the judges liking it was not top on my priority list, but rather that it would make a statement, was of more importance.
The theme of the event was transformation and the use of natural coloured textiles where a must. So basically you would of had to design and make a garment that would transform from one item to another, for example, making a shirt that recreates itself into a pant, is a far fetched example but I'm sure you got the picture by now.
I was all ready to rumble in the jungle with my metamorphosis inspired design, when it hit me that every dog has its day and I could feel this wasn't gonna be mine. I took a step back and rather enjoyed the show as it was showcased at the SAFW Pop Up Shop, in Sandton City from Aug 30- Sept 2. To my surprise the Durban University of Technology had numerous finalists in the top 10, at least now I know who's my competition once I have graduated. A highlight of the competition for me was when I heard that a fellow student of mine, Andea Rood, was elected as a finalist, congratulations Andea, the University of Pretoria together with all sidewalk scouts are proud of you.
The annual SAFW Student Competition event in collaborations with Renault SA was glad to announce the winner of the 2012 event on the 2nd of September, the lucky lady was Ashley Mathiesen, unfortunately I do not have photo of her winning creation but will keep you posted.
